What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a fitness programme that produces measurable outcomes through constantly varied functional movements performed at high (relative) intensity. So what on earth does that mean?!
CrossFit as a fitness programme
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme designed to optimize physical performance across 10 fitness domains: cardiovascular / respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. No single domain takes priority so CrossFit prepares us well for whatever life throws at us whether that’s an obstacle course, a physically demanding job or playing with young relatives!
Measurable outcomes
All of the movements that we perform have required standards so that we can track progress over time. If we can measure things we can optimise them and improve, which fits with the CrossFit mindset. We are consistently striving for marginal gains which compound over time – we never settle!
Constantly varied
CrossFit prepares us for the “unknown and the unknowable”. Because we don’t favour one fitness domain over any others we are ready to tackle any challenge with confidence. The adaptations that our bodies and minds undergo through CrossFit prepares us for any challenges inside or outside of the gym.
Functional movements
We do movements that translate to real life activities. Functional movements are natural movement patterns like deadlifting (picking your shopping up from the floor) or squatting (going from standing to seated to standing again).
High intensity
We work at high intensity relative to our individual capacities; this is the magic of CrossFit. All workouts can be modified and adapted by our skilled coaches to suit each participant so all we need to do is show up, work hard and trust the process to see results!
Why should I do CrossFit instead of going to a regular gym?
CrossFit will get you fit, keep you fit and you’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun in the process. At 11.24 Unity there’s also a high chance you’ll make friends you’ll want to see outside the gym but who will also keep you accountable inside the gym. Our experienced coaches will teach you how to perform functional movements safely and our structured in-house programming will ensure you are exposed to the 10 fitness domains of CrossFit, leaving no stone unturned!
Ask any one of our members and they will tell you that community is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that being fit and healthy is not just about physical movement but a number of things – how we think, sleep, eat, recover and how we connect with others. We pride ourselves on running a business driven by genuine care for every single member which extends far beyond the four walls of our box.
What if I haven’t done CrossFit before?
Great – we can’t wait to get you started on your journey! If you have no prior CrossFit experience or haven’t done CrossFit for a while then our skilled, caring coaches will take you through our fundamentals course before you join our classes.
In this session (or sessions – however long it takes to ensure you are ready to join classes) our coach will teach you the basic CrossFit movements to ensure you can safely and confidently join our classes where you will be fully supported and able to flourish!
Do I have to be fit to start CrossFit?
No, no, and no again! This is the most common misconception surrounding CrossFit. At 11.24 Unity we will meet you where you are at and support you to reach your training goals, whatever they may be. Our experienced coaches will tailor sessions to ensure they are appropriate for every individual in the class.
Everyone was once a beginner and the best time to start is now – fill our online enquiry form so we can get in touch to discuss your individual needs and how best we can support you to get started
Can anyone do CrossFit or is it only suitable for certain ages/abilities?
CrossFit is for anybody. We can’t make it any more simple than that. If you want to prioritise your long-term physical and mental health then CrossFit is for you.
All workouts and movements are adapted by our skilled coaches to meet your individual needs and tailored to ensure you achieve the desired stimulus for each session – contact us to find out more.
What if I don’t want to be an athlete; what if I just want to be healthy?
Great! One of our key focuses here at Unity is “longevity”. While we are here to support those who wish to compete in our sport, our overarching goal is to support overall health for the long-term (both in competitive athletes and those who “just” want to be healthy).
For exercise to be effective it has to be sustainable and we are confident that our CrossFit programming delivered by our skilled coaching team is precisely that.
What makes 11.24 Unity different from any other gym or CrossFit box?
The best way to find out is to experience Unity for yourself – get in touch to arrange a free drop in. We pride ourselves on not just being a group who exercise in the same shared space but rather an actual community of likeminded people.
At Unity you can expect to make real connections and find people who you’ll want to spend time with outside of the box.
We run frequent social events including open water dips, hikes and family friendly activities. In classes you’ll workout alongside people from all walks of life but one thing’s for sure – you can expect your classmates to get just as excited about your wins as you do!
Is CrossFit safe?
When performed with us at 11.24 Unity, an affiliated CrossFit box with experienced certified CrossFit trainers and thoughtful programming – absolutely yes! We would argue it is less safe not to train and to be sedentary than to invest in your health and fitness by doing CrossFit with us.
Any sport carries risk of injury but the incidence is no higher in CrossFit than in many other sports. In addition, at Unity we place importance on knowledge sharing and education on proper nutrition and recovery both of which are imperative in reducing risk of injury.
How often should I train?
If you’re new to exercising or perhaps new to CrossFit then we would recommend starting with three sessions per week initially, just to get your body used to our way of training but we will discuss this with you at the outset as everybody is different!
Our memberships are flexible and so if you start on one membership such as twelve classes per month and wish to increase this then we can facilitate that (even part way through a month).
